Investigating attachment as an emergent property

Drawing from ecological systems and their relationality, “Interlinked” project models attachment in both coupled matter and coupled bodies.

Attachment becomes a system governed by constraint, force and coordinated action. The project uses wearables to show relational states when bodies and materials become mechanically interdependent.

Project Overview

Interlinked is a wearable system composed of paired artifacts that mechanically bind and release only through coordinated motion between two bodies.

Form

Interlinked is a wearable system composed of paired artifacts that mechanically bind and release only through coordinated motion between two bodies.

Form

The system is implemented through constraint based joinery requiring simultaneous action from both wearers to engage or disengage the mechanism. The body becomes an active substrate, and movement becomes the interface through which attachment is negotiated.

Method

Investigating thresholds for attachment and thinking critically about material merging and emotional attachment similarities. Attachment is typically framed as an emotional or psychological phenomenon, which is here reframed as a material condition that can be modeled, constrained and stabilized physically.

Motivation

System thinking: Material and relational attachments

Adopting systems thinking to model relationships as micro-ecologies rather than symbolic bonds

Prototype: Rings as Joinery

The rings require motion from both individuals to lock in and out. However, the rings simultaneously trap both participants through the very connection that binds them. This is only revealed if one attempt to leave. Interlocked explores the idea of ownership and commitment present in human relations, and how our views of love create restrictions.
