Interlocked
“Interlinked” seeks to explore relationship dynamics and connectivity between people. Reimagining two engagement rings, the piece blurs the lines between love, commitment and control.
The ring duo were made to fit perfectly together, connecting two bodies into one. However, the rings simultaneously trap both participants through the very connection that binds them. This reflects the idea of ownership present in couples, and how our views of relationships create restrictions.
The rings require motion from both individuals to lock in and out. This showcases how commitment has to stem from both parties. However, to take the rings of, both individuals must interact, which can lead to wonder if attachment is only revealed when leaving.
Making Process
The piece took shape through several prototypes to find a working mechanism to create the lock and key aspect of the jewelry piece. I experimented with wire, clay, and paper. Once I found a suitable one, I carved the rings using green wax. I worked in three heat-bonded layers to create the undercut in the lock. Both rings were sanded and cast in brass: The male in yellow brass and the female in white brass. Once cast, the pieces were filed and hand sanded to remove imperfections and sharpen the mechanism. I underwent several polishing and cleaning cycles to achieve optimal shine and finish.
In my practice I am deeply curious and engaged with the idea of merging fields- uniting two different worlds into a singular product. I can inspire a sense of connection to those around us and remind us of the interconnectedness present in the world.
